There is a question many teachers silence because it sounds like resistance, and it needs to be asked.

The honest objection

It is easy enough to speak of divine order and the contemplation of truth when teaching Philosophy, History, or Literature. But what do we do when the subject is technical? Syntactic analysis. Multiplication tables. Subject-verb agreement. Conjugation. Where is divine order in a list of spelling exceptions a student must memorize simply because that is how it is?

The question is legitimate and deserves an honest answer, not a rhetorical one. And the best answer comes from what actually happens in classrooms.

Grammar's testimony

A Portuguese-language teacher described what happened in her classes when she taught stylistics and grammar in detail—not as a list of rules to memorize, but by showing how the language works.

As students came to understand the structure of language—why a certain inversion creates a certain effect, why an author chose one verb tense rather than another, what the position of an adjective does to meaning—they began to read literature differently. They stopped merely consuming the text and began to see inside it.

And the effect was wonder. The students realized that there was an order there that no one had invented arbitrarily, an intelligence at work in the very structure of language, a system of precision they had used all their lives without ever noticing it.

No one spoke about God in that lesson. And yet it was, in the proper sense, a religious experience.

There is a parallel account from mathematics. A teacher who, even before encountering classical education, already used mathematics to teach logic and order his students’ thinking observed the result: as they learned to structure their reasoning, the students became more capable of questioning and of reaching higher truths. The subject that had seemed the coldest of all revealed itself as a true apostolate.

Two technical subjects. No religious reference. Two experiences of contact with the order of reality.

The answer to the technical problem

From what precedes, we can draw a principle that resolves the initial objection.

A technical subject becomes formative when the student understands the logic and purpose behind the technique.

A rule presented as an arbitrary fact to be memorized is dead weight, and the student is right to resist it. The same rule, presented as the solution to a real problem, changes in nature: it becomes intelligible, and what is intelligible can be loved.

Spelling conventions exist because language needs stability in order to travel across time and space. Agreement exists because a sentence needs to make clear who does what, without ambiguity. Multiplication tables exist because there are operations the mind must have instantly available in order to think about what comes next. None of these things is arbitrary. Each solves a real difficulty, and when the student sees the difficulty, the tool ceases to feel like tyranny.

This does not eliminate effort. Memorization remains demanding, and it will remain so. But there is an enormous difference between difficult effort that feels meaningless and difficult effort whose purpose is understood—and that difference can make all the difference between a student who resists and a student who accepts discipline.

It is also worth saying that rigor is part of beauty. A subject taught loosely, with low expectations so as not to displease, produces no wonder at all, because no one marvels at what is easy. Admiration before order requires having seen that order in detail, and seeing in detail takes work.

Thaumázein: the beginning of everything

We now come to the concept that underlies this article, and it comes from the Greeks.

Plato, in the Theaetetus (155d), states that philosophy begins in wonder, in amazement before what is. Aristotle, at the opening of the Metaphysics (I, 2, 982b12), says the same in other words: it is through wonder that human beings began to philosophize, and through wonder that they continue to do so.

The Greek term is thaumázein: to wonder, to be astonished, to stand perplexed before reality.

Notice how radical this claim is. Knowledge does not begin with a well-formulated question, a practical problem, or a need. It begins with an affective state: someone looks at something and is struck with wonder. The question comes afterward, as a consequence of that wonder.

And this has an immense pedagogical consequence: if wonder is the beginning, then a lesson that never awakens wonder has not truly begun anything. It may have transmitted content with perfect efficiency and still not have started the process.

There is an even deeper effect, and it is especially relevant to a Catholic school. Wonder before creation inclines the person toward virtue. Those who experience reality as ordered, beautiful, and intelligible tend to treat it with reverence; those who experience it as indifferent chaos tend to use it however they please. Admiration educates the will without the need for a sermon, which is why it is essential for any teacher who wants to teach authentically.

Why the human person rejoices in understanding

One foundation remains: the anthropological one. It answers the question of why all this works.

Boethius, in The Consolation of Philosophy, treats true happiness as the perfect good (Book III) and distinguishes the degrees of knowing—sense, imagination, reason, and intelligentia (Book V, prose sections 4–5), the last of these being the highest. Souls understand, and they find happiness in devoting themselves to intellectual things.

The general principle is this: every being rejoices when it exercises the operation proper to its nature and reaches the end for which it exists. The bird flying, the dog tracking a scent, the vine bearing fruit—each nature has its own fullness, and attaining it is what we call happiness. Happiness is not merely a pleasant feeling; it is the perfection and fulfillment of a nature.

If this is so, and if the proper operation of the human person is to know the truth and love the good, then the joy of understanding is not a side effect of learning. It is a sign that learning is natural to the human person—that, in that moment, the creature is doing what it was made to do.

And here is the final step. Unlike animals, whose appetites can be satisfied, the human person has a thirst that nothing finite can quench. We know one truth and want another. We attain one good and desire more. This thirst is not a flaw in the design: it is a thirst for God, the beginning and end of all things, as Saint Augustine expressed once and for all when he wrote that our heart remains restless until it rests in Him (Confessions I, 1).

For us, this means something very concrete: every time a student experiences the joy of understanding, that student receives a small foretaste of what he or she was created for. It is not the same as prayer. But it belongs to the same family, and it prepares the ground.

A mathematics teacher who leads a student to the moment when the proof comes together and the student says, “Ah!” has, perhaps without realizing it, touched the highest thing that child is capable of.

Classical education is not a list of subjects

One conclusion needs to be stated because it clears up a common misunderstanding.

The human person was created for knowledge; technical instruction, when well taught, nourishes the soul and points toward God; and classical education is a way of thinking and seeking the truth, not a specific set of subjects.

This matters because of a frequent confusion. Classical education is not simply a school that includes Latin, Greek, and Rhetoric in its curriculum, though these are excellent and we offer them. A school can teach all three and still be entirely modern in method if it teaches them as an accumulation of disconnected content. And a Chemistry teacher can be fully classical by teaching the subject in a way that reveals order, demands reasoning, and leads students to wonder.

What is classical lies in the manner of teaching, not in the list of subjects. That is good news for every teacher of a “technical” subject: you are not at a disadvantage in this school. You are exactly where the order of the world reveals itself with the least mediation.

The question that remains

How can we preserve a sense of wonder before God's creation amid the demands of routine, corrections, deadlines, repetition, and the weariness of December?

It is an honest question: no one chooses wonder by an act of will, and an exhausted teacher inspires wonder in no one. This is not one more pedagogical technique, but something prior to technique—something that sustains the teacher before it sustains the lesson.

It is from this care for the one who teaches—not only for what is taught—that the wonder Acutis seeks to awaken in each student is born.
