Classical pedagogy and the Montessori method: what each one forms.

When a Christian family decides the traditional school will not do, it usually meets two heavy names in its research: classical education and the Montessori method. Both promise something different. Both have tradition. Both are presented, often, as if they were variations of the same path. They are not.

Where each method comes from

Classical pedagogy has no single inventor. It was built over centuries by generations of masters of the Western tradition — Greeks, Romans, the Fathers of the Church, medieval scholastics, Jesuits. Its structure — the Trivium and Quadrivium — formed Thomas Aquinas, Dante, Newton, Pascal, Mother Teresa. It is the pedagogy of classical Christian civilization.

The Montessori method, on the other hand, is a modern formulation. It was created by the Italian Maria Montessori at the beginning of the 20th century, from her observation of young children in a controlled environment. It is a specific method, with an identifiable founder, distinctive materials, and a pedagogical philosophy quite different from the classical.

What each method aims to form

Here is the point that matters most for the Christian family. The two methods proceed from different views of what a child is and what good formation is:

Classical pedagogy

The child is a soul to be formed. Formation has a direction: the good, the beautiful, the true. The teacher is a master, an authority who teaches. Content matters — and the tradition that transmits it matters even more. The child is introduced to the best that humanity has produced (literature, philosophy, science, art) and formed to recognize it, to engage with it, and to contribute to it as an adult.

Montessori method

The child is seen as a self-directed being, with natural developmental tendencies that ought to be respected. The adult is a "guide," not an authority who teaches. The environment is carefully prepared so the child can choose what to do and discover on their own. Content is, in large measure, secondary to process.

In classical pedagogy, the teacher hands the student an inheritance. In Montessori, the student discovers the world within themselves. These are different paradigms — and they form different people.

Where Montessori works, where it meets its limits

The Montessori method has great virtues in some areas, especially for very young children (up to age five) — fine motor development, practical autonomy, a harmonious environment, respect for individual rhythms. Many Catholic schools have adapted Montessori materials for that age range to good effect.

The limits appear as the child grows older. By principle, Montessori pedagogy avoids transmitting content systematically — something classical pedagogy considers essential. In areas like grammar, advanced mathematics, Latin, formal logic, history, literature, and classical rhetoric, the Montessori method simply does not have the tools that the classical tradition has been offering for centuries.

What this means for the Christian family

For the Christian family that wants to form children with solid intellectual and spiritual ballast, the choice is not between two equivalent methods. It is between a pedagogy built by Christian civilization and a modern method with its own philosophical principles, which do not always harmonize with the Catholic vision of the human person.

We are not saying that Montessori is "anti-Christian" — it is not. There are excellent Catholic schools that apply Montessori materials. But the philosophical weight of classical pedagogy, its internal coherence with Christian anthropology, its depth of content — all of this makes it, in our understanding, the natural choice for those who wish to educate in a Christian way.
